I N S C A P E S
The poet, Gerard Manley Hopkins, coined the word‘inscape’ to define the essential, individual nature of a thing. Observing a tree, he says, “I saw the inscape freshly, as if my mind were still growing...”
I have purloined his word, pluralised it and used it to describe the paintings in this exhibition. For me the idea of inscape amounts to a sort of creative conspiracy between the physical world and the way the mind perceives it. Where does one end and the other begin?
There are two elements in this exhibition which reflect my move from West Yorkshire to East Lothian. Half the paintings are based on an area of wetland near Wakefield known as the Washlands. The other half are my responses so far to the very different landscapes and seascapes around Dunbar where I now live.
'Washlands' exhibited at Wakefield Cathedral, Wakefield, West Yorkshire - (May 2014.)
